This festive season is the ideal reason to plan a cozy Christmas movie night! So grab the family, grab a film and grab enough popcorn to last you! We’ve even popped the running time of each movie below, so you can make sure you’re fully stocked with all the snacks you need!

Home Alone: (1990)
A go-to Christmas film. Entertaining for kids, teens, and parents, this is a hilarious Christmas favourite for everyone! When 8 year old, Kevin, is accidentally left behind during the holidays, he underestimates the danger (and comedy!) coming his way. He is left to guard his home against two burglars, who are raiding houses whilst families are out of town for the season. Your whole family will be impressed by the crafty traps and tricks Kevin has up his sleeve. Just be careful your little ones don’t get too many ingenious prank ideas!

Recommended for: Ages 7 and up. Rated: PG
Runtime: 103 minutes

Miracle on 34th Street (1994)
A remake of the 1947 classic, this special tale is one of my family’s favourites. Standing for the importance of faith, joy and kindness, Kris Kringle sets about to ensure that all these intangibles are still rendered important. He fights for the true meaning of Christmas by spreading the holiday spirit, making it an ideal movie to watch when you’re cozy in bed with the whole family! Promoting an all-round positive and festive feel, this is definitely one you will enjoy as much as the kids!

Recommended for: Ages 7 and up. Rated: PG
Runtime: 114 minutes

Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983)
Everyone needs a bit of Disney at Christmas time, and this is the ideal collection for those bite-size family film nights. Disney’s adaptation of Dickens’ classic, brings you “Mickey’s Christmas Carol”, a 25-minute short (we know its necessary to keep some things short and sweet mama!). Other short films included in this collection are “Pluto’s Christmas Tree”, about chipmunks Chip and Dale, “The Small One” about a playful little donkey, and “Santa’s Workshop”, featuring Santa himself!

Recommended for: Ages 4 and up
Runtime: Total of 64 minutes

Elf (2003)
Though this one’s a bit more appropriate for the older kids, it’s family friendly at its core! The movie is 100% on board with the magic of Christmas (as all good Christmas movies should be), and the overall message promotes acceptance and affection. Buddy, a human raised among elves, travels to New York City to discover his true identity. His search for a place to belong will have you laughing and sympathising -’cause everyone feels like an oversized elf sometimes!

Recommended for: Ages 7 and up. Rated: PG
Runtime: 97 minutes

The Santa Clause (1994)
This family-friendly comedy gives us all the insight into Santa’s busy schedule during this busy season (mamas, we know you can empathise!). When Santa takes a fatal fall off a roof, Scott Calvin, a divorced toy company executive, puts on the red suit and does what he has to do to save Christmas. This family comedy follows his adventures, as he takes over Santa’s rounds the night before Christmas. When he finds out this duty extends past Christmas Eve, he is definitely reluctant to accept the package deal. Just be prepared for questions about Santa after the movie ends!

Recommended for: Ages 6 and up. Rated: PG
Runtime: 107 minutes

The Dog Who Saved Christmas (2009)
You know you’re in for a treat when a pup sets out to save Christmas! This heartwarming holiday tale is filled with positive messages and Christmas cheer. When Zeus, a Labrador Retriever, is left at home for the holidays, he makes it his mission to guard his new home. You can even do a movie marathon and follow it with the sequel, The Dog Who Saved Christmas Vacation (2010). Warning: if you’re not planning on gifting your lucky little one a dog for Christmas, continue at your own risk!

Recommended: Ages 6 and up
Runtime: 90 minutes

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
You can’t forget this Christmas favourite! Based on Dr. Seuss’ 1957 tale, the well-known story is brought to life through this Christmas family comedy! Since the film derives from a children’s picture book, you already know it’ll keep the kids entertained! But with Jim Carrey behind a rubbery green face, mastering the art of distorted facial expressions, this one might be more suitable for a slightly older age group! Be prepared for lots of evil cackles (from your screen), and lots of loud laughter (from your sofa)!

Recommended: Ages 8 and up
Runtime: 104 minutes
