Imagine the smell of coconuts, turquoise waters touching your skin and the sound of palm trees swaying in the sea breeze. Or exploring a Mediterranean island off the beaten track…

Whether you’re planning an island escape in the Mediterranean or tropics, once we hit May and the temperatures start to rise in the desert city, all we can think about is escaping the heat. Here are some of the sassiest island holidays near Dubai with family-friendly hotels for the summer…

Bali Kamandalu resort

Bali, Indonesia

After Eat, Pray, Love, Bali has experienced a new level of popularity. And with local airline Emirates introducing Bali as its second location in Indonesia from the 3rd of June, it is the number one spot this summer for island fun. Bali doesn’t only offer white sandy beaches, but also lush jungles in Ubud and unique cultural experiences.

The weather in July and August makes it the best time to visit, although Ubud might be a bit cooler due to its location. Fresh fruit is also in abundance and it’s the perfect opportunity to challenge kids to try the unique fruits, or experience traditional noodle dishes.

Kids will love: A picnic among the rice paddies in Ubud observing the workings of indigenous insects and spotting ducks.

140903-SM-FoodieRoundUpStickers-Peark-greenStay for 4 nights at Westin Nusa Dua in a deluxe room, 3 nights at Kamandalu Ubud* in a chalet (both includes breakfast), transfers between airport and resorts and economy flights on Emirates. Packages start from AED 6,830 per person for a family of 4 sharing.

*Kamandalu’s design is not recommended for toddlers, but older kids. An alternative can be recommended if you travel with a toddler.

Malaysia

Langkawi, Malaysia

The island of Langkawi has been described as one of the prettiest in the Andaman Sea. With lush vegetation, beautiful sunsets and pristine beaches; it’s a paradise in its own right. July/August is mid-season – sunshine in the mornings and showers in the afternoons to cool the island. This is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of the rates offered.

Langkawi has more than enough activities to keep the whole family busy. Take the family to cycle through the villages or do a canoe trip in the mangrove forests. Fly a kite on a beach with the local kids or visit the Underwater World.

Kids will love: The cable car with a 360 degree view of the island or walking on the Skybridge – not for the faint hearted!

When you drive onto this small island north of Malta Island, it’ll feel like you’ve gone back in time to a forgotten era. The breathtaking scenery makes this island one of those gems off the beaten track. The cuisine is influenced by North Africa, Italy and Eastern Mediterranean tastes. Fresh seafood at Ta’ Karolina is known to be the best on the island.

There are numerous outdoor activities including hiking, canoeing, and cycling the rolling hills or horse riding on the beach. Snorkeling in the picturesque Blue Lagoon at Camino will surely leave an impression.

Kids will love: Segway tours are offered for numerous routes on the island, but only for kids from 12 years.

‘If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote ‘me too’ as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem.’ You’re probably aware of the social media campaign that’s tearing its way around the world - women have encountered harassment in all forms and suffered in silence for too long. This is the time to confront the belittlement and stand united. For ourselves, for our friends, our sisters, mothers, daughters - for anyone we know who may be suffering. #metoo

Today is International Day Of The Girl - a UN created initiative to ensure more opportunity for girls and to increase awareness of gender inequality faced by girls worldwide - including the right to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, and protection from discrimination and violence. This day is also about celebrating girls and all that females have achieved. We say a huge YES to that and to empowering girls and promoting gender equality today and everyday 💪🏻 How do you find raising girls in a world which still falls back on gender stereotypes, mamas?
