 Modern Japanese Dining in Dubai

The Occasion:

Ramausake has been my favourite bar for a while now. Their ladies night is super fun and while I’m something of an expert on their cocktail list, I had never eaten in their gorgeous looking restaurant. When Mr Y asked where I wanted to go for our anniversary, Ramusake’s recently launched weekend lunch was my immediate choice. The usual A La Carte menu is available with the option of a bottomless 3 hour drinks package prices at AED 250, coupled with live music.

The Venue:

Located in the Hilton Doubletree in JBR, Ramusake offers a modern take on Japanese cuisine through the informal ‘izakaya’ style of dining. The interior is cool and edgy featuring concrete flooring, charred timber, an abacus ceiling, over sized art and paper lanterns. Much like the menu, it manages to be traditional and futuristic at the same time.

The Vibe:

On my previous visits there’s always been a DJ playing and the bar’s been packed with dancing party people so it was nice to experience Ramusake’s mellow side! The huge doors to the terrace were open making the dining area feel light and airy. Their very talented singer, Laura Lopez, provided a bluesy soundtrack to our meal. We went dressed fairly smartly although the overall atmosphere was relaxed and informal.

The Food:

We began with a cocktail each which arrived looking as gorgeous as they tasted. To start we ordered the ebi tempura rolls and scallops with black truffle purée. Both were delicious. The obligatory spicy edamame (bit messy for a first date but just fine after 15 years together!) had a satisfying kick. We both chose main courses from the robata grill. The Black cod was a tasty as you’d expect but the stand out dish for us, was the smoked lamb cutlet which was tender, delicately spiced and all kinds of yum! We finished with the incredible yuzu custard tart and the hot chocolate fondant with caramel salted almond ice cream. Glorious gluttony!

Room for improvement:

The only slight down side was that the restaurant was quiet when we went. However it had only been open for lunch for a couple of weeks so we were probably lucky to enjoy it before word gets out!

What we loved:

The music was excellent, the venue is gorgeous and the food is both beautifully presented and delicious. Special mention goes to the staff who are absolutely lovely no matter what time of day or night it is! Most people know Ramusake as a night venue but it’s just as fabulous during the day, and I’m it won’t be long before it’s lunch sitting is as busy and buzzy as it deserves to be.
