Remote but accessible accurately describes the island of Kood in Thailand, on which Soneva Kiri is set amidst the lush tropical rainforest. The 29 oversized pool villas are positioned along the beachfront or hillside with sensational views out to sea, and throughout your stay there is a multitude of activities to cater for all ages on offer, from nature excursions to water activities and watching movies under the stars. There is also a Spa, offering a refreshing menu of holistic and traditional treatments.
Dining is a highlight, with menus created by a Three Michelin Star chef, treetop tables and private cooking classes with a master chef.

The impressive den in the shape of a giant manta ray nestled into the jungle landscape…what more could you want!
Due to a couple of last-minute cancellations, there is now some availability in the new year at Why House, near Galle. From 6th to 12th January (inclusive) there are two interconnecting Garden Rooms available, ideal for a family. Hurry though, these rooms won’t be around for long!

Just a short walk to the beach, children can go snorkelling, boogie boarding, fishing and surfing. Babysitting services are also available and there is DVD library for when the little ones need some down time.
A mere 35-minute scenic seaplane flight from Male Airport lies the spectacular Anantara Kihavah Villas. Perfect for both couples and families, Anantara Kihavah Villas offers a multitude of activities including canoeing, surfing, diving, big game fishing and tennis. Aside from the excellent kid’s club, the hotel is within easy reach of Male so perfect for those with younger children who don’t want the hassle of long travel time.
Courchevel’s ski area is the most famous of the Trois Vallées, the largest linked ski area in the world. We love Courchevel 1850 – the highest village – with its five star hotels, six Michelin-starred restaurants and airstrip catering to the jet set crowd. There is also some availability in chalets over Christmas and New Year, and what’s more a recent heavy snowfall looks (hopefully) set to stay!

Lightfoot can recommend the chalets that are best suited for children, and arrange services such as babysitting and ski club for setting the kids up on the slopes.
Skiers and snowboarders will love the precarious peaks of one of Europe’s finest winter sports destinations, Andermatt. Ride the cable car to the top of Gemsstock Mountain, nearly 3,000 metres high, or take a leisurely run along the wide-open slopes. Non-skiers are equally well catered for, with the stunning town of Andermatt boasting designer shops, restaurants and even museums. The wellness centre at the hotel is also not to be missed.
The Chedi was designed by award-winning architect Jean-Michel Gathy and the interiors are simply stunning, with painted murals inspired by 17th century European artist.

The exquisite Furka Suite has recently become available over the festive period. With three bedrooms and full kitchen and dining facilities, this is perfect for a family looking for a chalet with all the benefits of a hotel.
Langkawi is a lovely beach option for families, couples and groups of friends. Located on one of the island’s best beaches, activities such as windsurfing, sailing, kayaking and snorkelling are all available. Langkawi itself is a jewel in Malaysia and is home to many a pristine beach and delicious fine dining. Away from the beach, golfers will love the stunning ELS golf course, and we recommend kayaking through the mangroves and delving into the rainforest with a naturalist guide.
Why is it family-friendly?
As well as a great kid’s club and plenty of activities on offer, the Four Seasons provides free food for children under 5 from the kid’s menu. The family pool is also lovely, and baby sitters can be hired at a reasonable rate.

Just a 20-minute drive from Nairobi – which has direct flights from Dubai – Giraffe Manor is perfect for a short family break on its own, or when combined with a safari, which we could recommend. Furthermore, they still have some (limited) availability at the start of the year.
Famous for its resident herd of Rothschild Giraffe, Giraffe Manor is a luxury boutique hotel modelled on a Scottish stately home. Aside from interacting with the resident giraffes, activities include sightseeing around the Langata area, excursions to Daphne Sheldrik Elephant Orphanage, Karen Blixen Museum, Kazuri Beads, Matt Bronze and Marula Studios.
