Sometimes there’s only one answer to everything. Massage. Yes – if you’ve had no sleep (yes), if you’re stressed (also yes), if you just need an hour without your phone going every 2 minutes or, frankly, if you just want to be horizontal for a while – a massage is the thing! We’ve found a super cute little day spa in Umm Suqeim that offers a blissful escape from everyday life. From mani/pedis to hairdressing services, facials to beauty treatments and those must-have massages, these ladies do it all in a warm friendly setting within a rambling Beach Road villa complete with a beautiful leafy villa and swimming pool for spa guests to use in the cooler months.
Owned by a mama and daughter, De La Mer spa isn’t glam or glitzy but it’s very cosy. Body scrubs are made in-house using fresh ingredients including citrus fruits and herbs, there are lovely little extras such as ginger tea and chilled crudités to look forward to after treatments and there’s a team of smiley therapists who genuinely care (and who have magic fingers that’ll put you into that blissful state of almost-asleep!).
We tried the Balinese massage, a full body holistic treatment that uses a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure, reflexology and aromatherapy to stimulate the flow of blood and energy around the body (ok and get rid of some mega knots too). The treatment started with a body scrub, a quick shuffle down the hall to shower off and then a lie-down on a warm towel-wrapped bed where the next 60 minutes were spent in utter relaxation. Treatment rooms are decorated in a rich chocolate brown that gives that perfect dark feel and every session finishes in a relaxation room so that you can gradually start feeling ready to face the world again!
If you’re looking for bells and whistles and ultra glamorous facilities then this isn’t the place for you. But if you want a really good massage, some seriously good highlights (De La Mer’s colourists are the reason for many of the gorgeous blonde hues around town) or even a quick mani/pedi and an escape from the daily grind then we can’t recommend this cute little place enough.
