I love Valentine’s Day for the simple fact that it’s yet another excuse to get out the glitter, have fun, make a mess and be creative… not to mention being showered with love, cuddles and yummy little kisses from my two little cherubs.

Be Mine Paint Splatter Message DIY

Dreamy Valentine DIYs

This week, we started big. I had a large piece of craft paper that was begging to be used up, or thrown into the recycling bin. So I taped “be mine” onto the paper using masking tape, gave the cherubs a squeezy bottle filled with white/pink and red paint and told them to go wild…

Oh boy, did they have fun! Halfway through, Max just couldn’t resist getting his feet involved, so stamped through the paint and was stopped short of walking his pink paws right through the house…

Since we’d used up quite a lot of paint on this one, it did take ages to dry. We waited a full day, after which we gently peeled off the masking tape to reveal our message under the layers of paint. Since it wasn’t all that clear, I went over it with white paint, which kind of defeated the whole “peel and reveal”, but looked way better anyway.

Although I’m not quite sure what to do with this piece of art, it certainly was a fun creative/sensory activity and a fab little group activity, which encourages the building of relationships as well as emotional development.

Lace-Up Heart DIY

The second part of our dreamy Valentines Day craft turned out beautifully. It was super simple to do, involved some hand-eye co-ordination as well getting those fine motor skills working.

All you’ll need for these is:

  • A heart frame cut from craft paper
  • Hairpin
  • Wool
  • Feathers (of course)
  • Hole punch

Firstly, I punched holes all around the heart shaped frame. I then tied the wool to the hairpin to be used as a threading needle and the other end, I attached to the heart through one of the holes. Max was great at threading the wool across the heart, but Mieke who turns 2 on Valentines Day needed a bit of assistance.

On another length of wool, we tied on some feathers and attached this to the bottom of the heart. These looked great hanging in the kids room, but we didn’t stop there as they both wanted to make some more.

Hanging Hearts

This time round, I decided to do something that requires a little more supervision as it involves the use of bleach… I carefully explained how to dip just the tip of the cotton bud into the tiny drop of bleach and NOT to get this on their skin. They were great at it and I think part of the success was the kids feeling “big” enough to be trusted with this.

For this one, you’ll need

  • A heart frame cut from craft paper
  • Tissue paper
  • Glue stick
  • Cotton bud
  • Bleach
  • Wool
  • Feathers (of course)

We simply pasted the heart onto the tissue paper and set to work, decorating the tissue paper with the cotton bud and bleach. The kids loved watching the “magic happen” as the bleach took the colour out of the tissue paper, leaving opaque patterns. We finished these off in the same way as out previous ones and hung them up all together.

I hope you have fun with these, Mamas and may you be blessed with plenty of hugs, cuddles and kisses from your little lovelies this Valentines Day.
