Editor’s Letter: March Madness

Family LifePost Category - Family LifeFamily Life

It all started with a bunch of bright yellow daffodils, a big home clear-out  at the amazing Baby Bazaar  at the weekend – I met some fantastic people, made some extra dirhams and parted with a whole lot of baby things which really reaffirmed that hubby and I won’t be going for number 4 – followed by a little shopping spree courtesy of Kelly Lundberg at Style Me Divine who helped me part with all the clothes I’ve desperately been hanging on to for years ‘just-in-case’. Yes mamas, spring is most certainly in the air, even here in Dubai where our seasons aren’t as clear cut as elsewhere in the world. We’re all feeling a little more sprightly and we’re warming up for Easter; falling in love with eggs again and chocolate of course, booking spring break vacations (keep an eye out for one of our new travel contributors top picks of the best places to go this time of year) or planning how to fill the kids time if we aren’t jetting off to faraway lands. In fact, you might want to enter our March competition to win two weeks of spring camp at Inspire Nursery for teeny tots!

February was amazing in so many ways. My husband and I  grabbed a mini break in Oman at the Alila Jabal Akhdar, perched up on the magnificent Hajar Mountains. It was most definitely one of the most romantic places we’ve ever visited, or maybe that’s just because it was our first break away without kids for 4 years, but you can read all about it this week. The pictures are worth a thousand words and trust me mamas, this is an absolute must for anyone looking to escape it all or even go away en famille. With temperatures in the summer never rising above 28 degrees, it’s the perfect place for a short break. The kids also got to spend a very special weekend with their daddy and the ‘Fathers & Kids Camping‘ group (no mamas allowed), pitching tents in a wadi in Oman, telling stories around the campfire and enjoying the great outdoors. The review for that is coming very soon along with other ideas for dads in Dubai – after all, why should the mamas have all the fun with the littles?

I hate to be so terribly British and talk about the weather, but you must all have noticed how bizarre it’s been recently. There’s been a little rain, a sudden heatwave (did anyone else panic that summer had arrived prematurely?!) and a mega wind that brought half the desert into our homes and wreaked havoc with our hair – the seasons are definitely a-changing. March hair (hare – gettit?!) mamas, this month we’re experimenting with new styles (I’ve gone for the chop) and re-doing our roots, isn’t it funny how you can wake up one morning and not be able to live with them anymore!? We’ve also been picking out some gorgeous little accessories for our kiddos: ribbons for the girls, hats for the boys.

This month, we’re looking forward to the Emirates Airlines Festival of Literature, and although tickets to lots of the sessions were snapped up weeks ago, there are still plenty that have availability. Read our roundup of what you can still go along to here and our interview with one of the best children’s authors of our time Julia Donaldson here.

And of course there are some very important celebrations to look forward to in March – for the Irish mamas out there our very own Fiona Archibold will share her recipe for soda bread, colcannon and other Irish treats for St. Patricks Day. And for ALL the mamas out there, March 21st is all about you – yes, Mothers Day is just around the corner and we can’t wait to spend it doing what we love most, being with the family.

So welcome to March – and to spring –  mamas, it’s going to be fabulous and a little bit mad… just like this rambling Editors letter. Over and out xx
