ARTWORK worthy of mounting on the wall contained and contented kiddos and a couple of hours of peace and quiet for mamas – welcome to Ductac’s creative arts and crafts summer camp!

From fashion design to throwing shapes on the pottery wheel, Ductac runs courses designed for every age group (in fact some of them made this mama want to go all thirteen thirty and sign herself up) but as my three year old was at the bottom end of the age range, we settled on the age appropriate ‘Once Upon a Time’; a mixed media homage to all things magical.

Now, my mini-me’s no Matisse, but under the tutelage of the team at Ductac, that really didn’t matter. One of the things I liked best about this summer camp was the staff to child ratio, ensuring that my daughter had all the help she needed and scarcely noticed when I went on a coffee run and left them to it. When we arrived each day the staff had already cut and laid out the cardboard shapes and set out containers of poster paint, feathers, stickers and glitter galore. We brought our own water and snacks and dressed in our oldest duds (no aprons!) and that was it; morning made. The kiddos got to do the kind of crafting we never do at home (because of the clean up), recreating Rapunzel in her tower (my personal favourite), Cinderella’s pumpkin coach, complete with mouse and glass slipper (well cardboard actually but who’s counting?) and a late and welcome addition to the schedule: The Little Mermaid.

At the end of the week, my daughter brought home three pieces of artwork that are now proudly displayed on the wall and had such a blast that we’re considering signing her up for the studio workshops that run through the school term. As for me, I got a new bag (hanging out at the Mall of the Emirates during summer sales it seemed rude not to!) and the chance to sit down and have my first uninterrupted coffee of the summer. How’s that for a fairytale?
