The Holy month of Ramadan sees many of our usual go-to restaurants and cafés closing their doors during daylight hours. While the city offers some amazing post-sunset dining options (we love the traditional Iftar offered at the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Centre for Cultural Understanding – a great way for all the fam to understand what Ramadan really means and ‘break fast’ the traditional way), some of us need to get out and about and feed the brood during the day. Be prepared and plan ahead with our pick of Dubai’s best family-friendly options this Ramadan, you may even get to try somewhere you’ve never been before, mamas!

Fraiche Interiors 04

Fraiche
A fab place for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Fraiche is a French-Canadian bistro with a seriously good menu. Dig into eggs done every which way and French favourites including Beef Bourguignon and Bouillabaisse as well as yummy sandwiches and salads. For chocoholics, the Nutella crème brulee is worth a visit alone (and a regular treat for the Sassy Mama kiddos).
Open daily 8am – 10pm

The Gourmet Deli Company 1762
There aren’t many cafes that offer really innovative fast food that is totally good for you like they do at 1762. Here you can enjoy some serious treats like scrummy sandwiches, healthy mains and a to-die-for raw veggie mix. There really is so much good stuff to choose from you’ll want to come back to try it all.  A perfect spot for working mamas taking their littlies to lunch.

Hard Rock Café
You know what to expect at this American chain – rockin’ burgers, shakes, fried stuff in a throw-back setting. There’s also an Iftar buffet during Ramadan every Sunday – Thursday for AED 95 per person. A good pit stop if you’re hitting the Festival City shops and an ‘anything goes’ family friendly atmosphere that’s true to their ‘love all, serve all’ tagline.

Lime Tree Café
Hooray! The newest branch of the Lime Tree is open for business this Ramadan – whether you’re planning a mama meet up or need to give the kids a change of scene and a meal out. This Aussie place serves up healthy and mega-yummy food in a chilled environment with comfy seating and room for the kids to roam a little while mama enjoys a slice of the infamous carrot cake. The kiddies menu is fab too and includes crudites and dried fruit accompaniments. Fresh and nutritious dishes with a no-junk promise for parents- check!

MORE Café
MORE Café at Gold and Diamond Park is where the party’s at every Ramadan – or at least that’s how it feels behind the blacked out glass where families flock for breakfast, lunch and early dinner.  Morning choices include healthy Fresh Fruit Salad and Yoghurt or more filling options including English Breakfast and Eggs Benedict and Lunch/Dinner items range from Burgers to Curries. The place is usually packed but is very laid back – you won’t find yourselves cringing if your kids are noisy here as chances are they won’t be the only ones. Just Kidding is right next door if you want to pick up some baby essentials as is the gold and diamond park for a little (window) shopping mamas!
Open daily 8am – 6pm
Gold & Diamond Park, Off Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai
Tel: (+971) (0)4 323 4350

noodle house

The Noodle House
Almost all of the DIFC eateries are open during Ramadan – just expect to eat behind yellow curtains. The Noodle House is a great mama/kiddo option (and if daddy works nearby and work permits, he can join too –  yipeee!) The space is casual and functional and there’s a cute little Junior menu with mini (non-spicy) versions of the South East Asian mains.
Open daily 11am – midnight
DIFC, Dubai

Park Central Deli & Foodstore
Eat around the clock at this deli/café/foodstore – stop in for pastries and coffee in the morning and stay right through until dinner. This place does what it says on the tin, there are eat in and take out options for the whole clan and the vibe is relaxed and welcoming.

Reform Social & Grill
For the homesick British mamas amongst us, Reform is a slice of blighty in the desert.  Based on its Marylebone sister, the menu consists of gastro-pub classics including fish & chips, steak and a good old English fry up plus crumble for pud. There’s also a cute kids menu which includes a main, ice cream and soft drink for AED 55. A quintessentially British experience – without the rain.

Sassy Mama Tip: Reform is offering a 2 for 1 on all a la carte main courses from 12pm – 5pm Sunday – Thursday during Ramadan

Open daily 8am – midnight
The Lakes, Dubai
Tel: (+971) (0)4 454 2638

Riva Beach
If you’re looking to cool down and fill up, Riva is the ideal place.  Lunch and dinner Italian style is available in the ristorante – think pasta, pizza and everything in between. Pay for pool/beach access (AED 100 during the week and AED 175 at weekends, under 6’s go free, 6-13 year olds half price) and enjoy a dip in the gorgeous temperature controlled pool but remember that no food or drink can be served or consumed outdoors.
Open daily midday – midnight
Palm Jumeirah, Shoreline Building 8, Dubai

Sophies

Sophie’s Café
Roll your buggy in for a freshly squeezed juice or homemade cake (plus plenty of healthy homemade options for lunch or dinner) at this friendly little Palm Jumeirah local. The staff are super relaxed about kids romping about and the fresh interiors (complete with ‘waterfall wall’) offer a welcome respite from the heat.
Open daily 8am – 9pm
Palm Jumeirah, Riva Complex, Shoreline Building 8, Dubai
Tel: (+971) (0)4 451 5982

Sumo Sushi & Bento
Need your sushi fix mamas? Jump to Japan at Sumo Sushi & Bento in media city (yes it’s a bit of a random location if you’re not a media type but worth the trip for their delicious signature rolls.) Kids can choose from beef teriyaki, chicken teriyaki, katsu chicken or shrimp tempura bento boxes for AED 30. The dining space is small so not great for littlies who are itching to move around.
Open Saturday -Thursday 11am – 10pm and Friday 1pm – 10pm
Dubai Media City, Building 10 (BBC World), Dubai
www.sumosushi.net/mediacity

Toscana
The Souk Madinat is a great place to enjoy an indoor stroll while the minis stretch their legs – perfect pre or post lunch at Toscana on the waterfront, a family-friendly restaurant which serves traditional Italian cuisine with a great big smile. Kids are very much welcomed – crayons and other distractions provided so that mama can enjoy a relatively stress free meal. The outdoor terrace will be closed during Ramadan but it’s business as usual indoors.

Sassy Mama Tip: Ask for the best way down to Toscana if you have a stroller – you don’t want to end up having to heave everything up and down stairs and the lifts can be tricky to find.

Open daily midday – midnight
Madinat Jumeirah (On the waterway), Dubai
Tel: (+971) (0)4 366 6730
