Still stuck in the mega hot desert? Make a last-minute claim to that holiday you and the family deserve by switching Dubai’s boiling climate for the sun ’n’ sand of Bali’s Bukit Peninsula at the island’s southernmost point, where traditional Balinese-style accommodation and beautiful beaches await. Boutique travel specialists Mr & Mrs Smith presents three Bukit breaks the kids will love, zooming in on the charms of Karma Kandara and its swoonsome villas, Alila Uluwatu’s irresistible elevated vistas and the authentic charm of Kayumanis Jimbaran. Get set! Ready! Pack!

Karma Kandara, Bali

Style Supersized villas
Setting Dramatic cliffhanger

Screen Shot 2013-08-21 at 12.21.52 PM

Swap the Seminyak hordes for the karmic vibe of Karma Kandara, where tranquil Nammos beach awaits, 150 vertiginous metres below the resort. Spacious villas inspired by traditional Balinese garden compounds will ensure the kids have plenty of room to run around, and they can even take part in Balinese puppet dancing.

Sleeping Nab a Two-or Three-Bedroom Luxury Pool villa, each of which are grandly equipped with their own indoor and outdoor dining/living areas, fully equipped kitchen, private pool and courtyard garden. Bigger broods can book into the sole Four-Bedroom Grand Luxury Pool Villa, which sleeps eight. Cots are free and extra beds cost US$75 a night.

Activities The Karma Kids Club equals Nirvana to your soul, keeping little Smiths aged two to 12 occupied with activities including Balinese puppet-and mask-making and dancing, treasure hunts and junior cookery classes. Older kids can don their boardshorts and take some surfing lessons at Padang Padang Surf Camp, which is a 10km drive away. Snorkelling trips to the quiet neighbouring isle of Nusa Ceningan – home to mushroom coral framed by some of Bali’s bluest waters – is another option.

Feasting Kids will be tempted by ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’s baked chicken nuggets’, ‘Incredible Hulk grilled cheese sandwiches’, and ‘Harry Potter’s English muffin pizza’; local flavour comes courtesy of nasi or mee goreng.

Alila Villas Uluwatu, Bali

Style Minimalist eco glam
Setting Indian Ocean edge

Mr & Mrs Smith_Alila Villas Uluwatu_Bali_Indonesia_Sitting Area

Situated on an elevated plateau with limestone cliffs sweeping down to the ocean, you’ll feel like you’ve found the gold at the end of the rainbow at Alila Uluwatu, which neighbours one of Bali’s most important temples, Pura Luhur Uluwatu.

Sleeping Bag an open-plan One-or Three-Bedroom Pool Villa, which show off their eco credentials with a flat lava-rock roof and bamboo ceiling; both have their own private pool and cabanas, but the three-bed is perched atop a spectacular cliff edge best viewed from the private 21-metre infinity pool. Extra beds for older children can be added to rooms for US$30 a night.

Activities Pay your respects at Pura Luhur Uluwatu, a black coral-rock temple built in the 11th century to protect Bali from evil spirits. The kids will love the cheeky monkeys that call the temple home – but watch out as they may try to steal your belongings. Here, you can also watch surfers catching a wave at one of Bali’s legendary beach breaks, Uluwatu. Tire out the kids at GWK Cultural Park in nearby Badung, a 10km drive from the resort, which has daily Balinese dancing and music performances, plus a restaurant, Jendela Bali, located 300m above sea level, for prime South Bali vistas.

Feasting Children are welcome in the restaurants at any time – and they can enjoy freshly made tagliatelle and other western dishes at Cire and a taste of local produce at Warung: order a sambal tampa (tuna and mango salad) with satays on the side and coconut pancakes for dessert.

Sassy Savings Book with Smith to save 15 percent on stays until 19 December 2013

Kayumanis Jimbaran, Bali

Style Thatched villa sanctuary
Setting South Bali coconut groves

Mr & Mrs Smith_Kayumanis Jimbaran_Bali_Indonesia_Bedroom

Embrace Balinese tradition at a traditional thatched villa set amid a hypnotic sway of coconut palms with sweeping views of the Indian Ocean, where a 24-hour butler will make your stay even sweeter.

Sleeping The separate studio room in the One-Bedroom Private Estate can be set up with an extra bed; the Two-Bedroom Private Estate has Hollywood twin beds and its own ensuite so older kids can get some privacy. All villas have their own pool, timber terrace, open-air bathroom and fully equipped kitchen, which may come in useful for those needing to prepare bottles and baby food. Cots are free and an extra bed for 11-year-olds and under costs US$121 a night.

Activities Explore the fishing village of Jimbaran with or without your private butler on two wheels, or hit Jimbaran Bay, a public beach five minutes’ walk away with gentle waves for kid-friendly swimming. The resort also offers access to the private shores of Balangan and the beach club at sister resort Nusa Dua, where you can steal a peek at Bali’s highest mountain, Agung, on clear days. Both beaches are a 25-minute shuttle away.

Feasting There’s a separate children’s menu to appease the kids, and Tapis Restaurant and Lounge offers free milk, juice and snacks throughout the day to save you carrying about cereal bars and the like to stave off hunger pangs.

Sassy Savings Book with Smith to enjoy a two-night dinner and spa package until 31 March 2014.
